severe, interstitial pneumonitis of undetermined cause. The remaining animals were anaesthetised, systemically perfused with buffered solutions of paraformaldehyde followed by glutaraldehyde, and tissue prepared for examination in 1 m epoxy cross-sections stained with toluidine-blue. Examination of cortex, cerebellum, spinal cord, sciatic-nerve complex, and gastrocnemius muscle revealed no toxin-related pathological changes. Thus authentic samples of contaminated oil did not induce neuromuscular disease in a species that is sensitive to most neurotoxins. The relative doses were much larger than the amounts ingested by victims of the Spanish oil syndrome and the exposure

The Frequency of Toxigenic Strains of Clostridium difficile in Hospitalized Patients with Diarrhea in Tehran/Iran by PCR Method, 2010
Background & Aims: Clostridium difficile has been identified as a pathogen in antibiotic associated diarrhea (AAD), pseudomembranous colitis and also nosocomial diarrhea. The present study was performed to find the prevalence of toxigenic strains of C .difficile isolated from diarrhea patients hospitalized in Tehran hospitals. Method: A total of 98 fecal samples obtained during July to December...

Background and Aims: Clostridium difficile is an identified cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, antibiotic-associated colitis, pseudomembranous colitis and nosocomial diarrhea. The objective of this survey was to determine molecular analysis of toxigenic Clostridium difficile isolates from hospital environment in Tehran tertiary medical centers. Materials and Methods: In this descriptiv...
متن کاملDetection of Virulence Genes of Clostridium difficile in Children with Cancer by Multiplex PCR
Introduction: Toxigenic Clostridium difficile is the major cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, colitis, and pseudomembranous colitis. The pathogenicity of C. difficile is related to toxins A&B. Children with cancer are at risk of developing C. difficile infection (CDI) due to increased exposure to antibiotics, immunosuppression, and longer hospital stays. Recently, due to higher sensitivity...
متن کاملToxin A of Clostridium difficile is a potent cytotoxin.
Clostridium difficile is the cause of antibiotic-associated colitis in humans. The organism produces toxin A, which is generally known as the enterotoxin, and toxin B, which is known as the cytotoxin. Toxin A has been reported to have slight cytotoxic activity; in this study we show that cell lines (F9, OTF9-63, and P19) which express a carbohydrate to which toxin A binds are more sensitive to ...
متن کاملA Rapid Enzyme Immunoassay for the Detection of Clostridium difficile Toxins A and B in Stool Specimens
AND EXPLANATION OF THE TEST Toxigenic Clostridium difficile is the leading cause of nosocomial infectious diarrhea in developed countries. An estimated 300,000 cases of C. difficile associated disease (CDAD) are seen per year in U.S. hospitals alone. 2 Clostridium difficile is the etiologic agent in approximately 25% of all cases of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Virtually any antibiotic can p...

AIM In this study, the prevalence of C. difficile, from patients with gastrointestinal complaints and its association with other enteropathogen microbes were investigated. BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile is an important pathogen associated with outbreaks of pseudomembranous colitis and other intestinal disorders, such as diarrhea. PATIENTS AND METHODS Enterotoxin and cytotoxin (toxin A and...
